Open car transport

Open transport is how roughly nine out of ten vehicles ship, and it’s the same method dealerships use to move new inventory between lots. Your car rides on a multi-level open trailer — the familiar 7-to-10-car hauler you see on the interstate — secured with soft wheel straps and chained to the deck by an experienced driver.

Because open carriers are everywhere, it’s the fastest to book and the most affordable option. Your vehicle travels exposed to the open air, exactly as it is when you drive it, which is perfectly safe for daily drivers, leases, used-car purchases and family SUVs.

Insurance: every open carrier we assign is fully licensed by the FMCSA and carries active cargo coverage — typically $100,000 to $250,000 — and we verify it’s current before your car is loaded. Cost: most open moves run about $0.70 to $1.00 per mile, with shorter hauls costing more per mile; a typical 1,000-mile move lands around $880 to $1,010.

Enclosed auto transport

Enclosed transport carries your vehicle sealed inside a fully covered trailer — no road grime, no weather, no rocks, and out of sight at every stop. Carriers use soft nylon straps over the tires (never chains on the body) and load through a hydraulic lift gate or a low-angle ramp, so even a low-slung exotic or a classic with inches of clearance never scrapes.

It’s the right call for anything hard to replace or easy to damage: collector and classic cars, exotics and supercars, a freshly restored show car, a high-end EV, or a brand-new luxury vehicle you want delivered flawless.

The insurance difference that matters most: enclosed carriers haul high-value vehicles for a living, so they carry substantially higher cargo insurance — often $250,000 to $1,000,000 or more, versus the $100,000–$250,000 typical of open carriers. Both options are fully insured, but enclosed gives you a far larger coverage limit matched to a collector or exotic’s value, and we confirm the exact figure on your assigned carrier before booking. Cost: enclosed runs roughly 30% to 60% more than open — for a six-figure car, that premium is cheap insurance.

How insurance works on every shipment

You should never have to guess whether your car is covered. Every carrier we assign is licensed and insured, we verify active coverage before pickup, and your vehicle is protected by the carrier’s cargo policy in transit at no extra cost to you. We also document the vehicle’s condition at pickup and delivery, so in the rare event of a claim it’s straightforward. The only real difference between open and enclosed is the size of that coverage limit. Want the full breakdown? Read our car shipping insurance guide.

Bought it online?

Cars you bought online or won at auction

Buying a car online is the easy part — getting it home is where people get stuck. We pick up from wherever you bought it and deliver it to your door, fully insured, with $0 upfront and one all-in price.

That includes online retailers like Carvana and Vroom, marketplaces like eBay Motors, Cars.com, AutoTrader and Facebook Marketplace, dealer and private-party sales, and the major auctions — Copart, IAA, Manheim and ADESA. For auction lots we handle the buyer authorization and gate pass, and our carriers carry winches for inoperable and non-running units, so a salvage or project car is no problem.

Island & far-north moves

Hawaii & Alaska shipping

Shipping to or from Hawaii or Alaska means two legs — trucking on the mainland and an ocean crossing — and we coordinate both so you’re never juggling two companies or two invoices. We arrange the mainland pickup, the port hand-off, and the sea leg to any Hawaiian island or Alaskan port, plus the reverse, on one all-in price with a single point of contact.

Because island and Alaska moves run on fixed sailing schedules, booking a couple of weeks ahead gives you the best dates and the smoothest hand-off. Tell us your timeline and we’ll line the legs up around it.

Two wheels & powersports

Motorcycle, powersports & boat transport

Bikes and boats don’t ship like cars — they need the right tie-down points, soft straps and often a wheel chock, cradle or crate so nothing touches paint, fairings, gel-coat or exhaust. We match cruisers, sport bikes, touring rigs, dirt bikes, trikes, ATVs and UTVs with carriers who specialize in two-wheel and powersports transport, open or fully enclosed.

Boats & watercraft: from jet skis and personal watercraft to powerboats and sailboats on their trailers, we arrange the right flatbed or step-deck, handle any beam-width or oversize permits, and deliver dock-to-driveway. Full specifics are on our boat & watercraft transport page.

High-value or custom build? Enclosed with a chock and soft straps is the popular choice. More on bikes and crating options is on our motorcycle shipping page.

Heavy equipment & machinery

Construction, farm and industrial equipment needs the right trailer for the weight and dimensions — a flatbed for smaller machines, a step-deck or lowboy / RGN for tall and oversize loads. We move skid steers, excavators, tractors, forklifts, backhoes and more, arrange any oversize or overweight permits and pilot cars, and handle the routing end to end.

Send the machine, its weight and dimensions, and the pickup and delivery sites, and we’ll quote a precise, all-in price. See our heavy equipment transport page for specifics.

Service questions, answered

What's the difference between open and enclosed transport?
Open transport carries your car on the same kind of multi-car trailer dealerships use to move new inventory. It's the cheapest and most available option and it's safe for the vast majority of vehicles. Enclosed transport seals your car inside a covered trailer, away from weather and road debris, loads it with soft straps and a lift gate, and carries higher cargo insurance. It runs about 30-60% more. Most people pick open; enclosed is worth it for luxury, classic, exotic, low-clearance and brand-new vehicles.
Is my vehicle insured during transport, and is open or enclosed different?
Yes, every shipment is fully insured. We only assign carriers that are licensed by the FMCSA and carry active cargo insurance, and we verify that coverage before your car is loaded. During transit your vehicle is protected by the carrier's cargo policy at no extra cost to you. The difference is the limit: open carriers typically carry about $100,000 to $250,000 in cargo coverage, while enclosed carriers usually carry $250,000 to $1,000,000 or more because they haul high-value vehicles. We can confirm the exact coverage on your assigned carrier before you book.
How much does it cost to ship my car?
It depends on distance, your vehicle's size, open vs. enclosed, and the time of year. As a rough guide, open transport runs about $0.70 to $1.00 a mile, and the per-mile rate drops the farther you go. Enclosed runs roughly 30-60% more. The fastest way to get a real number is our instant quote tool, which uses live carrier-market rates.
Can you ship a car I bought online or won at auction?
Yes, that's one of the most common things we do. We pick up from Carvana, Vroom, eBay Motors, Cars.com, dealers, private sellers and the major auctions (Copart, IAA, Manheim, ADESA) and deliver to your door. For auction lots we handle the buyer authorization and gate pass, and our carriers have winches for inoperable and non-running units.
Do I have to pay anything before pickup?
No. You pay nothing until we assign a licensed, insured carrier to your vehicle. There's zero risk to lock in your price.
Can you ship a car that doesn't run?
Yes. We have carriers with winches and the right equipment for inoperable vehicles. Just tell us the condition when you request a quote so we send the right truck.
How soon can you pick up my vehicle?
Most pickups are scheduled within one to five days of booking. If your dates are flexible, you usually get a better price and faster placement.
