Registering a car you have shipped into Texas

How long you have

Within 30 days of establishing Texas residency. A separate $90 new-resident use tax runs on its own 30-day clock — 60 days if you are active-duty military.

Emissions test

Only in 17 counties. Houston area: Brazoria, Fort Bend, Galveston, Harris, Montgomery. Dallas–Fort Worth: Collin, Dallas, Denton, Ellis, Johnson, Kaufman, Parker, Rockwall, Tarrant. Austin: Travis, Williamson. Plus El Paso. Outside those, nothing. Bexar County (San Antonio) joins on 1 November 2026 — not yet in force.

VIN inspection

For a normal move, no. You self-certify the VIN on form 130-U. Texas also dropped the annual safety inspection for non-commercial vehicles on 1 January 2025, so if you are outside the 17 emissions counties there is nothing to book.

Your insurance

Texas minimums are 30/60/25 and the insurer generally needs to be authorised in Texas. TxDMV words this more loosely than most states, so check your existing carrier is licensed here before assuming it carries over.
